Altamont Gardens

The gardens at Altamont, located near Tullow in Co. Carlow. This estate was left to the state by its owner Corona North some years ago. She died in 1999.
The grounds are maintained by the Office of Public Works. The river Slaney runs by the grounds and you may see Salmon and Trout rising and perhaps even catch sight of an Otter.
The gardens are really worth a visit and considered one of the nicest in the country.

Black Cap feeding on berries

We have a good variety of birds spending the Winter in Ireland. This fellow was just outside the kitchen window.

Gardens of the Museum of Modern Art

I decided to show you something from another of Dublin. The museum is housed in an old army barracks but the gardens are quite nice to walk around having spent a couple of hours in the gallery.

O'Connell Street, Dublin

The main street of Dublin showing the GPO on the left, famous for its association with the 1916 Easter Rising. The spire in the centre was put up a number of years ago. This is where the Nelson Pillar stood and which was blown up in 1966, the 50th anniversary of the rising.

Jogger in the snow

A quick shot with my mobile phone, a Samsung S8500. Not too sharp.

Snowy morning in Clontarf

Another snowy morning in Clontarf and the near classic in red made it from its home on the Hill of Howth, about twelve kilometres away. Despite the rear wheel drive and the steep hills the driver had to negotiate, the 'lady in Red' made it! Your Blogger, also the owner of such a fine car with nearly three hundred kilometres on the clock, knows what it is capable of.

This thing looks a bit grumpy

This was donated to Dublin City Council by one of the South American countries. We are more used to seeing it surrounded by grass. Rather different now!

Clontarf in the snow

2nd December. I have not seen this amount of snow by the coast since January 1981, and certainly not at this time of year!

Royal Dublin Golf Club

The second oldest golf club in Ireland, it was established here in 1898 on the Bull Island. It has had many famous golfers over the course in the past. Names like Jack Nichlaus, Nick Faldo, Greg Norman and of course Christy O'Connor. many many more.
The island during the winter is home to hundreds of Brent Geese and lots more birds from the frozen north. It is a paradise for bird watchers at this of year.

Slipway for the Clontarf Boat Club

This is a slightly different view of an earlier post. Today we are in the grip of Winter and I do not think anyone will venture out in a little sailing boat just to freeze to death!

St.John's Church

We woke up this morning 28th November to see a lovely covering of snow here in Clontarf. Very unusual at this time of year by the coast. The weather people expect it to last for only a few days. Pity!

Samual Beckett Bridge

The bridge was designed by the famous architect Dr. Santiago Calatrava and put in place in 2009. The location is just opposite the new Convention Centre in the Financial Services Centre of Dublin ( on the right of the photo ).
Well known for designing bridges , he also did another one over the Liffey, the name of which escapes me.
